We Took Loans to Finance our PhD Theses, Says UNILAG Couple

At the golden jubilee convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos few days ago, a lecturer couple in the faculty of Science wowed the gathering as they both bagged PhD same day, with the wife emerging as the best graduating student. As graduating PhD students of University of Lagos (UNILAG) were filing out to take their respective seats within the expansive UNILAG multipurpose hall, Temitope Oluwaseun Oguntade (31) and her husband Bamidele Olusegun Samuel (39) were the cynosure of all eyes.

The couple’s identity which was initially unknown to many spectators was exposed by the master of ceremony, who in his announcement drew the couple out of their facade and turned them to instant celebrities whose picture paparazzi couldn’t resist. Interestingly, Temitope and Bamidele aren’t just soulmates. The duo is also lecturing at the institution’s faculty of science-albeit in different departments. The couple’s glamorous outing was at its peak when Temitope’s name was pronounced as the best post graduate student of UNILAG golden jubilee convocation.

According to the panel of examiners, Temitope’s thesis was indeed the best among others submitted for the award of PhD certificates. It was an honour that was not lost on the couple. “I am very delighted that after many months we have put into the programme, we have succeeded in getting to the end of it. It is also a good thing that after all these efforts, we are completing the programme with such a great honour coming to our family,” Temitope’s hubby said. Temitope, 31, had researched on dermatophytes, isolated from patients at two tertiary health institutions in Lagos State. She said she was prodded to carry out the research exercise having discovered that certain skin diseases in patients, are known to have been treated at one time or the other but resurface barely six months after such ailments appeared to have been cured.

“You see, it has been observed that over time, when people have skin diseases and they approach a dermatologist for treatment, we realized that after tests have been carried out and after using prescribed drugs and it appears as if the disease has gone, somehow these skin diseases resurface barely eight or six months after. So, the question now is, is it that the skin diseases have become resistant to prescribed drugs? What could be the cause?” Temitope said.

Her inquisitiveness led her to discover among other things, that virtually all the dermatology centres in Nigeria only carry out diagnosis through the conventional laboratory methods. But according to Temitope, the world has moved beyond that stage, as it has now become a norm to apply both molecular and conventional methods while carrying out tests on the affected organisms. “Although the molecular laboratory method appears expensive, it is no doubt the most accurate. I used both to arrive at my findings. Because when you rely on the conventional method alone, you find out that often times, the dermatologists apply the wrong drug for a particular fungus or organism.

Of course there are tendencies to assume that certain fungi look alike when tests are carried out, but the truth is that, no matter how similar they may be, they are not the same, and you can’t simply detect the error through the conventional method but through the molecular method,” Temitope emphasized. For tests that need to be carried out in three stages, Temitope soon ran into troubled waters as there was no dermatology centre in Lagos where she could get all the three stages conducted. According to her, the first two stages which include DNA extraction and the PVR could be carried out in Nigeria but the third and the most critical stage can’t be done anywhere in the country.

“There are equipments for the first two stages everywhere in Nigeria, but for the third one, there is not. The excuse being given is that, it is too costly. But I’m not sure it is costly to the extent Nigeria can’t afford it. While I was doing my research, and I got to the third stage, I had to send the samples to Maryland United States, for the tests to be carried out. Initially I had thought of travelling over there but I realized that the cost was simply outrageous but since I got to know that I could send from here through mailing, I was happy to explore that avenue.

“So, anytime I collected my salary, I would convert it to dollars and use it to load the card, and after I must have conducted the DNA extraction, and the PVR, I would simply collect the samples, pack them into a bag and head for the courier service (DHL). Through DHL, it would be delivered in three days. And immediately they received it, they would alert me and ask that I payed in their money. Immediately they got confirmation of payment, they would carry out the tests and send the results back to me,” Temitope said. It was an exercise that cost Temitope and her spouse fortunes but which eventually paid off. The panel of judges, who sat to examine the 48 PhD theses submitted before it, rated Temitope’s the best.

And when asked if she had been motivated to carry out the exercise through the means she adopted so as to be conferred with the best graduating student award, Temitope could only explain her ignorance of the criteria adopted. According to her, all she wanted to do was to finish the programme, earn her PhD and continue with her life. “All I wanted to achieve was, to complete the thesis on time and have a rest of mind. But the fact that I have best graduating thesis however makes me feel on top of the world. It has been a long time I relaxed; now I think I can dance Azonto tonight. I got married during the whole process of the PhD and I have not really enjoyed my marriage. Now I want to start enjoying it.

I have the feeling we are going to start another honeymoon tonight,” a very elated doctor of botany, said. Temitope perhaps has every reason to dance Azonto. Dayo, the couple’s two-year-old son has been at the receiving end of his parent’s passion for academics. Even at birth, Temitope hardly had time for her son. “I remember that, the day I was to put to bed I was initially at the lab,” Temitope said. “I got home around 8pm and went into labour by 10pm. And after I delivered the baby, I went back to the lab. It was not easy,” she added. That fact was corroborated by Temitope’s hubby. A marine biologist with speciality in eco-toxicology, Dr Bamidele said his wife could not even exhaust her three month maternity leave before returning to the lab. To him, if there is anyone they both owed an apology, it is their son who did not receive much of their attention.

One other significant constraint the couple said they had to contend with, was funding. At his end, Bamidele had carried out a study on Heavy Metal Contamination of Ologe Lagoon and Bio-markers of Oxidative Stress in Pachymelania Aurita. The study which was meant to determine the impact of industrial effluent and domestic wastes being discharged into the lagoon on the ecosystem especially in the industrial area of Agbara, Ogun State, gulped a lot of financial resources just like the one carried out by his wife. And considering there was no grant for the researches, they were left with no option but to take loans. “Yes, it cost us a fortune to get two PhD reports prepared at the same time.

In some instances, we had to resort to taking loans. We took loans to finance the research exercises. I can’t give the actual cost nor can I give you a rough estimate. All I can tell you is that the theses cost us millions to prepare. There was no grant for us either from government or the industries,” Bamidele said. In the opinion of Bamidele, in an ideal society, theses of this magnitude ought to have been funded by government and industries concerned.

He added that in fact, the industries have so much at stake in this regard than government, because it helps them know the level at which wastes and effluents emanating from their factories are impacting on human and environmental well being. “The industries also have key roles to play. In fact, they are the largest beneficiaries of researches like these. But they are not funding them. And because they are not doing so, employments are not being created,” Bamidele lamented.

Sunday Mba Betrayed Us – Warri Wolves

Warri Wolves are insisting that Nations Cup hero, Sunday Mba, is still their player, after the midfielder argued that he was is now contracted to Enugu Rangers.

Mba told Sunday Vanguard that, “we were four players that left Warri Wolves before the Nations Cup. Why is it that I am the only one they are bothering. The truth of the matter is that I have no contract with Wolves.”

However, Wolves say no transfer involving the player ever happened and ordered Mba to return to the club for training before Friday this week.

“We don’t want to be exchanging words or be arguing about Sunday Mba. If he were a bonafide player of Rangers let them field him in a match and see if they would not be sanctioned,” Amaju Pinnick, the Executive Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission said. “The Interim Management Committee ruled on February 13 that he was a Warri Wolves player as Rangers were yet to buy him and we want to leave it at that.”

Warri Wolves spokesman, Etu Moses, further accused Mba of treachery, pointing out that the Super Eagles player, presented himself as the club’s player, just to get money from Governor Uduaghan.

“Why did he present himself as Warri Wolves player and collected additional N2.5m when the governor of Delta State rewarded Super Eagles players on February 14 with N2.5m each?” he queried.

“His became N5m because the governor doubled the reward for all the Warri Wolves players. He has one year remianing in his contract,” Moses said, adding that the club expected Mba to resume in Warri on or before March 1, 2013

Brazilian Exchange Students Refuse to Sleep in Unilag Female Hostel

Nigeria is currently embroiled in a diplomatic stand-off with Brazil over an incidence that occurred at the University of Lagos. Female students from Brazil who are part of a one year exchange programme at the university, refused to stay in the hostel accommodations provided for them on campus even after school authorities provided generating sets for the rooms, installed air-conditioner units, and equipped the rooms with water purifiers, DSTV, internet access and working telephone lines.

The foreign students turned down the rooms and asked instead for accommodation in any of the reputable five star Hotels in Lagos. The Nigerian programme coordinator refused, telling them that their Nigerian counterparts in Brazil had settled down into the student accommodations provided for them in Brazil so there was no reason the Brazilians shouldn't stay in Moremi Hall in Unilag. Unbeknown to authorities, the foreign students contacted their Embassy claiming that they were in fear for their lives and this led to Interpol agents being called in to 'rescue' the Brazilians from Unilag.

This has now resulted in a tense exchange of words between officials of the two countries but the Brazilians are unrelenting in their decision to remove their citizens from University of Lagos and from the exchange programme. Speaking from the Brazilian embassy in Lagos, one of the rescued girls explained why she and her fellow exchange students were afraid for their lives. According to her, during their induction, when they first arrived in Unilag, they noticed that a lot of Nigerian girls had Brazilian hair on their heads. This did not alarm them and they even found it amusing when they learnt that women were willing to pay as much as $2000 for the hair of their compatriots.

What gave them concern however, was when they learnt that Nigerians are fond of using black magic to remove such intimate body parts as sex organs from their fellow Nigerians - for the sake of money. And to make matters worse, when they started mixing with their hosts, they noticed that more than a few Nigerian female students demonstrated 'more than casual' interest in their hair. At this point they really became afraid.

They reasoned that if Nigerians can steal each other’s sex organs and if Brazilian hair is an expensive and highly sort after commodity, then sleeping in a Nigerian female hostel can only be asking for trouble. As of the time of going to press, efforts were being made by school authorities to allay the fears of the Brazilian students and to avert what could become a major international incidence.

Measures being considered by the University VC include banning the fixing of human hair or asking residents of Moremi Hall to sign an undertaking that they will not employ any tactics, physical or spiritual, to harvest the hairs of their Brazilian guests.

12-Year-Old Girl Saves Her Family From Fire That Destroyed Their Home

A 12-year-old girl was today hailed a hero after she saved her younger brother and sisters from a fire that ripped through their home after a television burst into flames.

Courtney Ratcliffe kept a cool head when the faulty TV set alight moments after her younger brother had finished playing a video game on it.

As the blaze spread, she guided brother Lureice, 11 and sisters Lexus, nine, Shannon, six, and one-year-old Summer Poppy, out of the house.

The fire destroyed most of the family's possessions at their terraced house in Newton Heath, Manchester, on Wednesday.

But Courtney's mother Sarah, 29, who was having a driving lesson at the time, said: 'I am so proud of my daughter - I can't believe she kept her cool so well.

'In fact she reacted better than I probably would have.

'She's got a really good, level head on her shoulders usually anyway, but to come home and see that she'd rescued her brother and sisters was amazing.

'I don't care about my possessions - they can be replaced. I'm just so glad that she managed to get them out of there safely.'

The children were being looked after by Ms Ratcliffe's mother, also called Sarah, 62, and father Derek, 64, while she was having her lesson.

The couple were clearing out a shed in the back garden when the second-hand TV, bought two months earlier, burst into flames in Lureice's bedroom.

Courtney picked up Summer Poppy from her cot and led her siblings outside after the house's smoke alarm went off.

The children's cousin Declan, 14, who was also in the garden, ran to neighbours who called 999.

Courtney said: 'The fire alarm was going off, my brother went to see why and he came running down the stairs and said there was a fire.

'I took my little sisters out the back and brought them around the front to a neighbour's house. It was just instinctive.'

The children's grandparents were treated by medics after trying to tackle the fire themselves.

Ms Ratcliffe said: 'I was out on a driving lesson at the time and not long into it [the instructor] received a a lot of phone calls on his mobile.

'I pulled over so he could take it and he said I had to get home quick because my home was on fire.

'I thought it was probably just a little toaster fire in the kitchen but he drove me back home and when I got back I saw the state of it, I realised just how serious it was.

'I was frantic thinking about my kids and whether they were safe, and as we pulled up there was Courtney holding Summer Poppy and the rest of them standing with her.

'Seeing the damage to the house was heartbreaking - I can't believe a TV did so much damage.

'Pretty much everything has been destroyed - including their school uniforms.

'We're in temporary accommodation now but I don't know how long it will be before we can move back in there - the place was gutted.

'I'm heartbroken, particularly about the things that can't be replaced like pictures of the kids when they were babies.

'I'm devastated and I've lost everything but I'm just so proud of what Courtney did, she was brilliant.

'She got her sisters and just got out of there.'

Neighbours have rallied round to make sure the family has everything they need, including a pram and baby clothes, and are looking after their remaining possessions after they were burgled after the fire.

Because the blaze had taken hold of the entire first floor and attic, fire crews had to use a thermal imaging camera and cutting away equipment to ensure it was entirely out.

Councillor David Acton, Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, said: 'What Courtney did is absolutely amazing.

'It is terrible that the family have lost so much in this fire but, thanks to their sister's calm response, they all got out safely and still have each other.

'It's frightening to think what could've happened if there hadn't been a working smoke alarm and if Courtney had not reacted in the way she did.

'Firefighters can help you with safety in the home by talking about escape plans and fitting smoke alarms when they come out to do a Home Safety Check.

'If you haven't had one, please let Sarah's story prompt you to do so.'

Madonna's Instagram Account Threatened to Be Shut Down For 'Mature Content'

The 54-year-old singer has received a warning from the company to adhere to its community guidelines, which ban photos that show "nudity" or "mature content".

Ironically, Madonna posted the photo sharing site's message on Instagram.

In the letter, the site owned by Facebook lets Madonna know that she shouldn't share photos that are not hers or pictures of illegal content.

"We value these guidelines, and believe that they will help keep Instagram a safe & fun place for everyone," the note reads. "It is important to note that continuing to violate them may result in a disabled account, or discontinued access to Instagram, without warning."

Madonna, who joined Instagram earlier this month, has posted snaps of her cleavage and behind, as well as pictures of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, which could all be considered illegal or "mature."

‘Jonathan, Sambo Have Right to Seek Another Term’

A group under the auspices of Jonathan /Sambo Solidarity Forum Home and Abroad (JSSFHA) has appealed to Nigerians to disregard claims of one term pact between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Governors in 2011 by Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu.

A statement issued in Abuja and jointly signed by the National President and Secretary of the group, Franklin Ekong and Mr. Idoko Hilary Nduka urged Nigerians to support Jonathan and Alhaji Namadi Sambo to contest the 2015 presidential election.

JSSFAH, in the statement, said it is the constitutional right of both individuals to seek another term in office if they deem it necessary, urging President Jonathan to go for a second term in office as President.

“We want to call on Nigerians to join hand with this God- given leader to transform Nigeria rather than trying to engage Mr President in uninteresting, wasteful arguments that are uncalled for.”

Kanye West’s Grandfather Approves Of Kim Kardashian

Ranting rapper Kanye West secretly escorted reality TV vixen Kim Kardashian to the Oklahoma City home of his 97-year-old grandfather — and the old man was bowled over by her curvaceous beauty, but skeptical on the subject of marriage.

“She is beautiful — and she’s just as sweet as she is beautiful — and that’s what I liked about her!” said Portwood Williams Sr., the wizened-but-wise grandad who has long been a tower of strength for West.

“She was just down to earth, she’s rich, and those kinds of people, they’ve got everything,” added Williams, a veteran of Oklahoma’s civil rights sit-ins of the 1950s who helped desegregate lunch counters.

But the retired furniture refinisher also said in an exclusive interview he “couldn’t care less” if West weds the visibly pregnant Kim, expecting her first child this July.

Williams knows all about long-term nuptials — his own marriage lasted 72 years, until the death of wife Lucille five years ago. And he knows all about short-term unions — like the 72 days Kim spent with NBA star Kris Humphries before filing for divorce.

“They didn’t make it,” he joked. That pessimistic view of modern marriage led him to conclude — after five hours in which Kim charmed him last autumn — that the pair should be in no rush to tie the proverbial knot.

“Maybe they could have a successful marriage, but I’m not going to spend time worrying if they’re going to make it or not,” Williams said.

But if Kayne ever gets around to popping the question, would he go? “No, I don’t do weddings,” he quipped. “I don’t like weddings… You spend a lot of money, then in a few weeks, you’re separated!”Williams’ reflections came before the outspoken rapper launched his lyrical – and profanity-filled – rant on Saturday in London against targets ranging from the Grammy Awards to President Obama.

In foul-mouthed form, halfway into the performance of his song “Clique,” he blasted the Jay-Z-Justin Timberlake collaboration, “Suit & Tie,” rapping, ” And I got love for Hov but I ain’t f—ing with that ‘Suit & Tie.’”

He also skewered the rap industry as superficial, thanks to the Grammys, and then dissed Obama, who last year had branded him a “jackass,” in unprintable fashion, saying, “I don’t give a f— what the President say.”

Kim Kardashian Ripped Nigeria Off $500,000 for 'No Show'

American Reality TV star Kim Kardashian did her bank account no harm when she appeared at a Valentine’s Day concert in Lagos for a few minutes and walked away with some N82m. But her already questionable reputation has suffered some more.

Kim Kardashian was scheduled to headline Darey Art Alade’s Valentine’s gig with the catchy title ‘Love . . .Like a Movie’. What happened was certainly like a movie, the grand performances of the night, and Kim’s varnishing act. She came and left so fast if you had blinked, you would have missed her.

But the talking point was she was the money she was paid to make an appearance. $500, 000 (Half a million dollars), which translates as N 82. 5 m. That much. And Kim just walked in and walked out 45 minutes later and was back on the plane to the States. The cyber space has been agog with condemnation of her action and some have gone as far as calling the reality TV star a fraudster.

What was Kim Kardashian invited to do, anyway, since she has no obvious talent? She does not sing or dance and the acting she does on TV is said to be reality. Darey Art Alade brought her in to co-host the event with him. Her name did sell tickets, even if some of these tickets went for N100, 000. And those who paid this much had the distinction of being at a pre-event dinner where Kim K made a brief appearance as well.

The concert at Eko Hotel, one of Lagos’ premiere event centre, had Kim make a brief appearance and then left, confounding the audience. One of them was Charles Novia, ace Nollywood producer. “She came in at the beginning of the show and spent just forty-five seconds or so on stage! That was all we saw of her. She introduced herself and asked the audience to prepare for a night they wouldn’t forget and left. Shikena!

She was even glum, as if it was a task to just be there at all!” he wrote in an article. “If you ask me, there was no need for Kim Kardashian at all in this concert. None whatsoever! Was she paid huge sums and flown here to just introduce Darey? It didn’t make sense to many. My two cents on that would be that Darey’s management knew they had a great show planned but needed the ‘ooomph’ factor to pull in more crowds. And Kim Kardashian was that factor, perhaps. Anyway, the show would go down in the history of concerts in Nigeria as the best. I mean it!” he added.

The organiser, Darey Art Alade has been basking in the eulogies pouring in on Twitter over the success of the show, while carefully avoiding comments on Kim’s brief appearance which has agitated many people who feel the money paid to bring Kim to Nigeria was a total waste. Blogger and Publisher Jeremy Weate, in a blog post was not as kind when he described her action as 419, saying she had scammed the scammers.

Le Mitraillou twitting as @OlaHolloway said, “Kim Kardashian’s stay in Lagos reminds me of her marriage.” This is a snide reference to Kim’s fairy tale wedding to Kris Humphries, which enjoyed wide television coverage but lasted all of 72 days. The divorce is still ongoing while Kim has moved on and gotten pregnant for rapper Kanye West. Humphries has said he had been set up for the fall from the beginning just so Kim’s reality show can enjoy a boost.

Many guests at the wedding accused Kim of staging the event in order to make money from endorsement deals and the expensive gifts she was going to get, an allegation the reality TV star has denied. Whatever disappointments her brief appearance engendered, the likes of TuFace, 9ice, Iyanya, Timi Dakolo, Praiz, Waje and others who combined with Circque du Soleil an extreme theatre, made the night memorable for the audience in what has been described as one of the best organised concerts in the country.

Two-feet tall, this dwarf danced her way to gov’s heart •Gets ‘special invite’ to Govt House

A Cross River State-born actress, 33-year-old Joy Udok, is a dwarf whose height is just two-feet. She told JOHNSON BABAJIDE that her stature has not deterred men from making amorous advances at her. She also spoke of her dream of becoming a legal luminary.

According to the holy books, after God created everything under the sun, including humans, the peak of His creation, He saw that it was good. But human beings come in different sizes, height and shapes.

A lady, 33-year-old Joy Udok, despite her extremely short stature, says “I’m proud of my stature; it is God who created me this way, and I have no regret at all. Or who can question God? He does things the way He wants, and this is how I am created. May His name be praised.”

Miss Udok is so short she could be mistaken for a five-year-old child. Everywhere she goes, stares from the young and old, from the lowly and highly placed, are riveted towards her.

Saturday Tribune ran into her around the Government House in Makurdi, where she had come to honour the invitation of the governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam; though for three days she could not see the governor, who she said gave her the invitation at a reception held in a village in the state, where her theatre group, Igboji Theatre Group, had performed and entertained guests.

“It was at a function in one of the villages here where our group performed that I met the governor,” she said.

“He must have enjoyed your dance steps,” Saturday Tribune asked.

“I don’t know; but you know I am a good dancer. Everybody loves my dance. Maybe that was what attracted him (governor) just to appreciate it,” she quipped.

“He called me (and I even sat on the same seat with him) and said that he would be travelling the following week, but that I should come to the gate of the Government House here and tell the security people that he asked me to see him. But since I have been coming, I have not been allowed to see him,” Miss Udok said.

Udok said her stature did not in any way affect her relationship with men, stressing that she had been involved in relationships with opposite sex on two occasions but had burnt her fingers. Because of her experience, she said she had to distance herself from men.

“Despite my size, men run after me. I have been involved in relationship on two occasions, but none of them is reliable. Men are cheats and betrayers.

“In Makurdi here, I had a lover who was younger than I. I showered him with love but what I got in return was betrayal. He professed to love me but I caught him with ladies many times. Apart from that, he drinks a lot and smokes, so I had to call it quit,” she said.

When asked whether the bitter experience would stop her from getting married in future, she said: “If I see the right man, I will surely get married, but I see men as cheats and betrayers.”

What kind of man would she like? Miss Udok said “I want a man who will love me for what I am, and must be trustworthy.”

A native of Aboki in Cross River State, Joy Udok is the fifth of six children born to Mr Daniel Ayim Udok and Mrs Stella Udok. She attended St Unoh Nursery and Primary School and the Government Technical College – both in Aboki.

She hopes to become a lawyer someday, “but there is no money for me to further my education, so I decided to come to Benue State to look for how to make a living on my own.

“On my arrival, I lodged in a hotel until I met a female friend who accommodated me. From there, I joined the Igboji Theater group. We dance and perform stage plays.”

According to her, the group has produced a home video entitled The Big Lady in Town, which will soon be released.

But life has not been easy, she said. “What we get from the group is nothing to write home about; Sometimes, we get as little as N800, which does not even come often.

So, how does she augment the little she gets to make ends meet? Miss Udok told Saturday Tribune that she relied on the goodwill of people who, either out of pity or admiration, gave her tokens, “and life goes on,” she added.

She told the Saturday Tribune that if she eventually succeeded in meeting the governor, she would request for a job so that she could further her education.

Having been in Benue State for two years, Joy Udok said: “The people here are very hospitable. They are good, particularly to visitors, and I hope I will remain in the state for long.”

Nigerian Most Wanted Yahoo Boy Finally Arrested In Australia

Finally Tobechi Onwuhara has been apprehended. Took them Five years though, but you can never hide for long i guess. He’s sure spending the rest of his life behind bars.

He owned a hip hop record label and he lived the high life of luxury hotels, gambling, strippers and bling. But behind the glitz and the glamour Tobechi Enyinna Onwuhara was one of the FBI’s most wanted men, allegedly a fraudster who scammed at least $44 million through cyber crimes.

But the advanced con artist, who fled Florida in August 2008 amid an intense FBI investigation, has been caught in Sydney and sent back to the US to face a string of fraud charges.

Nigerian-born Tobechi Onwuhara, 33, was “provisionally arrested in response to a request from the United States Government” in December last year, according to a spokeswoman for the Australian Attorney-General’s department.

Mr Onwuhara is to face prosecution in the US for fraud related offences, including identity fraud and computer fraud, the spokeswoman said.

“On January 29, the Minister for Justice [Jason Clare] made a determination to surrender Mr Onwuhara to the US.

“As a matter of long standing practice, the Australian government does not comment on working matters,” she said.

Fairfax Media understands Mr Onwuhara had lived it up in Sydney after disappearing in August 2008.

The FBI’s website now lists Mr Onwuhara as captured, but with scant detail of the arrest. They were offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

The source who tipped off Fairfax said Mr Onwuhara had made regular trips to The Star casino as well as splashing cash at many popular nightclubs.

“He would bet at the Star under a different name, he was a regular, then one day he just disappeared and someone told us he wanted by the FBI,” a source said.

A spokeswoman for Echo entertainment, owner of The Star, did not return calls and emails. The US Consulate in Sydney also did not return calls.

An Australian Federal Police spokesperson confirmed the AFP arrested Mr Onwuhara.

According to the FBI’s most wanted list Mr Onwuhara is wanted for his alleged involvement in an elaborate scheme that defrauded the financial industry out of tens of millions of dollars.

“Onwuhara is a key member of a group of Nigerians who allegedly have conducted fraudulent banking activities from Florida and Texas, since 2005,” the FBI’s most wanted website states.

“It is alleged that the group has used online internet databases to steal victims’ identities.

“Once acquired, they allegedly use the victims’ information to gain access to the victims’ ‘Home Equity Line of Credit’ accounts and wire transfer the money to accounts mainly located overseas, some in the United States.”

Some of Onwuhara’s alleged co-conspirators have been arrested, inside and outside of the United States, the FBI’s website states.

Onwuhara was charged federally with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and a federal call for was issued for his arrest by the US District Court, Eastern District of Virginia, on August 1, 2008.

Pope Benedict XVI asks Twitter followers to pray for him as Church faces fresh scandal

Pope Benedict XVI asked his Twitter followers to pray for him and the Church

Pope Benedict XVI has asked his followers on Twitter to ‘pray for me and the Church’ as another scandal threatens to overshadow the selection of his successor.

The Pope delivered his last Sunday blessing to 100,000 people in St. Peter’s Square earlier, before taking to Twitter to ask for the public’s prayers.

‘In these momentous days, I ask you to pray for me and for the Church, trusting as always in divine Providence,’ he wrote on his official English account

His final Sunday address coincided with Britain’s most senior Roman Catholic cleric, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, missing Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral after being accused of ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

Three priests and one former priest are calling for Cardinal O’Brien’s resignation alongside a complaint against the 74-year-old leader of the Scottish Catholic Church.

The Scottish Catholic Church said in a statement that cardinal O’Brien, who represents Britain’s vote for the next Pope, has contested the claims and was taking legal advice.

The Observer reports that the four men, from the diocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh, made statements to nuncio Antonio Mennini, the Pope’s representative to Britain, about inappropriate behaviour in the 1980s.

Cardinal O’Brien, who is due to retire next month when he turns 75, will vote on behalf of Britain in the papal elections, helping to choose who replaces Pope Benedict XVI when he steps down on February 28.

David Beckham signed for PSG in January

David Beckham may be famous for his swerving free-kicks but he is now is facing an investigation into whether he is swerving taxes following his move to French side Paris Saint-Germain.

The former England captain signed a five-month contract with PSG in January and is making his debut tonight.

In an apparent altruistic gesture, Beckham announced he was donating his salary, believed to be £700,000 a month, to a local children’s charity
.
Victoria Beckham will not be relocating to Paris with the couple’s children

Dubbed ‘Le Spice Boy’, the 37-year-old has faced accusations the donation is a cynical plan to dodge France’s high income tax rate.

Jean-Claude Blanc, managing director at PSG, admitted a ‘formal discussion’ was already taking place with France’s ‘fiscal administration’.

A spokesman for the French Treasury declined to discuss ‘individual cases’, but confirmed that all ‘high-worth’ individuals working in France would be ‘scrutinised’.
David Beckham leaves PSG’s training ground

By keeping his family in London and only signing on a short-term deal, Beckham will not be liable for a 1.5 per cent tax on his worldwide income and estimated wealth of £200million – a bill of at least £3million.

A spokesman for Beckham said: ‘David has given any income he would have earned from PSG to charity. We have nothing to hide.’

But the ploy has caused consternation in France, with MP Gérald Darmanin saying: ‘He will be paid less than my parliamentary assistant. Be serious.’

Should have gone to Specsavers? Car crashes into opticians in Kent

It is thought the crash took place on Sunday

Sometimes a punch line to a joke is so obvious it almost hurts to say it, and this was the case when a car crashed into a Specsavers shop front in Kent this weekend.

The opticians, known for its catchy advertising slogan, took a hit from a silver Ford Focus in the high street in Sevenoaks on Sunday.

Onlooker Philip Holland told Metro he arrived at the scene at around 12.30pm, by which time two police officers were present, but there was no sign of any driver or ambulance crews.
The crash scene from inside the shop

It is not thought that anyone was seriously injured in the crash.

‘It appears that it may have been a runaway car, perhaps someone didn’t put on the hand brake properly,’ he said.

‘The red fluid is almost certainly engine coolant, as the radiator was ruptured when the car hit the store window.’
The car was later removed from the shop front

Mr Holland said that the car had been removed when he and his wife Federica returned an hour later.

‘Pretty funny it crashed into a Specsavers though,’ he added. ‘I mean what are the chances?’

Kent police were not available for comment.
