READ Omotola Stout Message To Men Who Beat Their Wives

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has come out to say no to violence.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

The superstar is emphasising the fact that no human being has to accept being violated in any form because it is a crime punishable by law.

”Violence is unbelievable,” the actress shares her thoughts at the ‘Poverty Is Sexist’ campaign launch by an organisation in Lagos.

”When it’s your child, I don’t see it as violence, I see it as discipline because you are hoping they must have learned or you have trained them enough but when they are above 18, to hit them is violence,” she added.

Omotola further stated that the continuous rise of domestic violence in homes is disturbing and said it was time for the government to put a stop to it given the number of women that are being violated.

”To even hit a woman is double unbelievability,” the actress stressed.”If you are a man and married to a woman, how do you hit a woman and expect her to be romantic or loving towards you? No adult wants to be hit. Once you hit them you take a piece of their heart away.”

Buhari and the promise of change

President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari

In this piece, TOLUWANI ENIOLA traces the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy and the emergence of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, as the President-elect of the country’s 4th Republic

The history of Nigeria is dotted with dramatic changes in power. Since the country gained independence in 1960, it has witnessed turbulent political transitions, culminating in a series of bad leadership which has earned the country a negative reputation. With a record of six military coups and long military administration, the country has been unlucky with its crop of leaders who stole the country blind and frustrated its advancement. Since independence, the quest for change had been elusive.

The yearnings for change assumed a fresh dimension in 1999 when the nation returned to democratic rule. Expectations of the masses were, however, dashed with the poor performances of successive governments. The disillusionment of the masses with the 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party in power strengthened the clamour for a change. The disillusionment produced the revolutionary seed that precipitated the coming together of opposition parties which bonded along the progressive pathway in the struggle to oust the PDP. The merger eventually gave birth to the All Progressives Congress.

The APC was formed on February 6, 2013, two clear years before the 2015 elections. The APC, an alliance of the four biggest opposition parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria, the Congress for Progressive Change, the All Nigeria Peoples Party and a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance – merged to take on the PDP in what observers described as a significant historic alignment capable of changing the story of the ‘Giant of Africa’. Basically, by the reason of its place of operation, which is the South-West, and by the politicians in its fold and its manifesto, the party is regarded as an offshoot of the Unity Party of Nigeria. Led by the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, the UPN was seen as the bastion of democratic socialism and progressivism in the Second Republic.

On August 21, 2013, the party unfolded a 31-page manifesto of its cardinal programmes featuring war against corruption, food security, integrated transport network and free education. Others are devolution of power, accelerated economic growth and affordable health care. According to the party, the programme will transform Nigeria into a progressive state anchored on social democracy.

“Our government shall vigorously pursue the expansion of electricity generation and distribution of up to 40,000 megawatts in four to eight years,” the APC said in the manifesto.

The ruling PDP congratulated the APC on its registration as a political party but boasted that the APC would stop President Goodluck Jonathan from returning to Aso Rock after the presidential election. The “largest party in Africa” had boasted that it would rule for 60 years. The highpoint of the 2015 presidential campaign was on December 11 last year when Buhari, who had contested the presidential elections three times, polled 3, 430 to defeat four other aspirants of the APC in the presidential primary held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Meanwhile, disillusionment and discontent trailed the Jonathan administration as Nigerians complained of growing insecurity, corruption, epileptic power supply and inflation. The agitation for a better life by Nigerians made the APC a viable alternative to the ruling party. But some critics saw Jonathan and Buhari as Nigeria’s “miserable choices” while Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, however, described Buhari as the “better of the two evils.”

The APC presidential campaign rode on the wavelength of drama, pomp and circumstance, focusing on its manifesto and highlighting the problems facing Nigeria. Nigerians became excited with the possibility of change. Buhari’s running mate, who is a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, added a new dimension to politicking when he boarded BRT buses to propagate the party’s manifesto. said he boarded the buses to show that the APC was interested in the welfare of average Nigerians.

Like his PDP counterpart, Buhari’s campaign promises are numerous. He promised to create one million jobsfor Igbo youths by revamping huge coal deposits in Enugu State for the generation of electricity and export. He also said one of his first priorities in office was to bring down the rate of the dollar to the naira.

The retired general excited Nigerians with his anti-corruption stance, using his no-nonsense reputation to underscore his determination to fight corruption. He promised to probe the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the fuel subsidy accounts just as he vowed to deal with corrupt government officials and fix the power sector. The Daura-born military general also promised to provide the nation with security, reduce the pump prices of petroleum products and build operational refineries.

During his campaign in Adamawa State, Buhari said, “What we save from the fight against corruption and leakages, we will invest heavily in education, infrastructure, equipment, and teachers. The best we can do for our generation and future generations is to give them qualitative and quantitative education. An APC government throughout the country definitely will do that.”

While delivering his speech at the Chatham House in the United Kingdom last year, he said, “Let me assure you that if I am elected President, the world will have no cause to worry about Nigeria as it has had to recently; that Nigeria will return to its stabilising role in West Africa; and that no inch of Nigerian territory will ever be lost to the enemy because we will pay special attention to the welfare of our soldiers in and out of service. We will give them adequate and modern arms and ammunition to work with.

“We will improve intelligence gathering and border control to choke Boko Haram’s financial and equipment channels. We will be tough on terrorism and its root causes by initiating a comprehensive economic development plan, promoting infrastructural development, job creation, agriculture and industry in the affected areas. We will always act on time and not allow problems to irresponsibly fester, and I, Muhammadu Buhari, will always lead from the front and return Nigeria to its leadership role in regional and international efforts to combat terrorism.”

Buhari’s victory at the March 28 presidential election and his inauguration which would take place on Friday is laced with hope and expectations – reminiscent of the great hopes that greeted the nation’s independence 55 years ago.

Contesting the office for the fourth consecutive time, Buhari polled 15,424,921 votes against President Jonathan’s 12,853,162 votes to clinch the presidential seat. Thousands spilled onto the streets, brandishing brooms, the APC’s symbol of change to celebrate the victory. Not a few Nigerians hold the belief that the ex-Head of State would place Nigeria on the path of rediscovery from the failures of the Jonathan administration.

The Coordinator of the Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reforms, Ayo Opadokun, described Buhari’s victory as the beginning of the remaking of Nigeria.

Trade unions such as the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have vowed to hold the incoming government accountable in respect of his party’s promises to Nigerians and workers in particular.

Not unwary of the daunting challenges ahead, Buhari has told Nigerians not to expect miracles, adding that all hands must be on deck to make Nigeria work again. In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, lamented that the APC would inherit a country in crisis, saying that the Jonathan administration was leaving a distressed country for the APC to inherit. The Vice President-elect has also raised the alarm about the state of the Nigeria’s economy. On May 9, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, lamented that Nigeria’s economy was nearing collapse. Odigie-Oyegun lamented that Buhari would need N4.1tn to pay the outstanding salaries of public servants at the state and federal levels, fuel subsidies, as well as debt servicing, among other expenses.

As the hard times, caused by the fuel scarcity, global fall in oil prices and non-payment of salaries bite harder, all eyes are on Buhari who is expected to perform ‘miracles’ by redeeming the country from her dwindling fortunes.

Buhari, during his Chatham House lecture said, “I cannot change the past. But I can change the present and the future. So, before you is a former military ruler and a converted democrat who is ready to operate under democratic norms and is subjecting himself to the rigours of democratic elections for the fourth time.”

The next four years would determine the APC’s credibility as a change agent and whether Buhari is a converted democrat as he claimed.

We have no money to import fuel — Marketers

People searching for fuel in Lagos...on Friday

There are indications that the current fuel scarcity may not abate unless the Federal Government pays the outstanding N200m reportedly being owed the oil marketers as subsidy claims.

The oil marketers, who confirmed to our correspondent that they had stopped importation, said they could not continuewith fuel importation as result of inadequate funds.

They spoke through the Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Obafemi Olawore.

Olawore, along with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, also denied the report that they were on strike.

He said they were still waiting for the Federal Government to call them to another roundtable on how to pay the N200bn fuel subsidy owed them.

Olawore said, “We are not on strike. People are just painting us the way they want. We are not importing because we don’t have the money to buy the products. The government has not invited us. The only thing we have heard is the resolution of the Senate on Thursday and I think that they are going to invite us soon.”

Out of N356.2bn subsidy the government reportedly owed oil marketers, the Ministry of Finance paid the sum of N156bn about two weeks ago.

With about five days to the handover of power to a new administration at the federal level, tanker drivers in the country have also stopped lifting fuel from the depots, leaving many filling stations without the product and others selling at exorbitant prices.

The General Secretary, NUPENG, Mr. Isaac Aberare, said tankers drivers would start lifting the product as soon as they received the directive to do so, insisting that they were not strike.

He said, “If there are products in the depots, we will go there and load. Remember that the Lagos State Government gave tankers drivers 48 hours to leave the road instead of clogging the whole road and making navigation difficult; we have complied with that instruction. Any time there are products, we will go and load.”

In its response to the lingering fuel scarcity in the country, the Senate on Thursday directed its Committee on Petroleum Resources (upstream and downstream) to commence a full investigation into the causes of the persistent fuel crisis.

The directive was made following a motion by the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi.

Ningi said, “We need to know whether fuel scarcity has come to stay. We need to know whether it has become part of our lives. We need to plan.

“By planning and talking about it, we are now sensitising Nigerians to brace for the impending issue of fuel scarcity whether it is going to be here permanently or it is temporary.”

Sports: Oshoala wins BBC Women’s Footballer of The Year award

Asisat Oshoala

Africa Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has won the inaugural edition of the British Broadcasting Corporation Women’s Footballer of The Year on Tuesday.

Oshoala beat four other nominees to the award, which was presented to her by the BBC’s Caroline Rigby at the Nigerian camp in Canada.

The Liverpool forward, who is the youngest of the nominees, won the highest number of votes from fans all over the world to beat Spain’s Veronica Boquette, Germany’s Nadine Kessler, Scotland’s Kim Little and Brazil’s Marta.

Oshoala’s performances at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014, where she was the Most Valuable Player and highest goal scorer, and the Africa Women’sChampionship, where she also emerged the best player of the tournament, endeared her to the hearts of football fans worldwide.

The excited former Rivers Angels forward said the award will motivate Nigeria to go for the World Cup in Canada, which begins in June.

“I am extremely proud to have won this award as it is a real honour for me and my family,” she told the BBC at the award presentation.

“Just to be nominated against such world-class players was a rare privilege, but to have won the award is absolutely fantastic.

“It is a really good thing for us as a team because we now know that we have something great and now we want to go at the trophy. We can do it, we did it in 2014, we can also do it this year as well.”

Oshoala also believes that her win will serve as a spring in the feet of many women footballers in the country.

“There is going to be a lot of motivation for women’s football in Nigeria now because of this award because there are a lot of fans out there. Support for women’s football in Nigeria is now growing very high.

“Last year was an incredible year as I managed to help Nigeria U20s get to the U20 World Cup final, as well as being named African Women’s Footballer of the Year, so this award tops off a great year.

“I know my Liverpool Ladies coach is going to be happy right now. Before I left the United Kingdom, he called me and said to me ‘don’t worry I hope you win the award and we’re going to celebrate it when you come back’.”

Oshoala, who became the first African footballer in the Women’s Super League, signed for Liverpool in January.

Balotelli will stay at Liverpool

Mario Balotelli

Misfiring Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli will remain at the club next season, his agent Mino Raiola claimed on Wednesday.

Balotelli, 24, struggled in his debut campaign at Anfield following his £16m move from AC Milan last year, scoring just one league goal and four in all competitions.

It has prompted speculation that Liverpool, who did not qualify for the Champions League, will look to move the Italy international on in the close-season transferwindow.

But Raiola told Sky Sports, “We have talks with Liverpool and he will stay. I spoke many times with the club and they were happy with his input as a professional.”

Asked if Balotelli and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had successfully adapted to working with each other, Raiola replied: “I think Mario did. I cannot talk for Brendan Rodgers.

I was a motor park tout —Benue gov-elect

Chief Samuel Ortom

The Benue State incoming Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has described his experience as a motor park tout and his election as governor as a divine arrangement and the handiwork of God.

Ortom, who bared his mind to The PUNCH in an exclusive chat in Makurdi, said his elevation from grass to grace was due to hard work and his firm believe in God.

He said, “My journey from being a motor park tout to an elected governor is purely a divine arrangement. I cast my mind back to when I dropped out of school in Form 2 but I remained hardworking and I did not engage in crime to survive.

“One thing I know is that hard work pays and you must keep faith with God; power belongs to God and He alone gives it to whoever He will.”

The former Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment said he had dropped out of school in Form 2 due to lack of funds but this did not force him to engage in criminal activities to survive.

Ortom, however, noted that the selection process of the PDP delegates in the last party’s primary in the state was manipulated by the party leadership intentionally to thwart his ambition of becoming the next governor.

He said the party also frustrated the support of the Benue populace who supported him.

He said, “The process of selection of delegates in the last PDP governorship election was manipulated by the leadership of the party to thwart my ambition and frustrate the people who all supported me. But God vindicated me and blessed me, and now I am an elected governor.”

Three family members killed over land dispute

Three family members killed over land dispute

The three family members

THREE members of a family in Amechi community, Awkunanaw Local Government Area of Enugu State have lost their lives over a land dispute.

The victims were identified as Nnaemeka Agbo (alias Echidime), Sunday Nnamani, and Nnamani Ikpa.

The disputed land lies directly opposite government-owned Millennium Estate, which is still under construction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

It was gathered that a yet-to-be identified gunman shot and killed the young men on May 1, 2015 while they were on the said land.

Our correspondent learnt that the three men were part of a 15-man delegation sent by a faction of those laying claim to ownership of the land to undertake an on-the-spot inspection of the land and report back to the larger family.

It was also learnt that the two factions locked in the bloody dispute were from the same kindred – the Umuaniebo clan of Isiagu, Amechi, Uwani in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state.

The traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Joseph Aniebonam Ogbodo, had to cut short his overseas trip as a result of the development.

According to a source in the community, who did not wish to be named, the three families of the Umuaniebo clan, namely Umunwakum, Umunogo and Umunengene, jointly owned the disputed land and several others in various parts of the Enugu Capital Territory area, especially Achara and Independence layouts, and Awkunanaw.

The source said the Umunengenes suddenly turned round to claim exclusive ownership of the piece of land on which the fatal shootings took place.

The development pitted the Umunengenes against the two other families – the Umunwakums and Umunogos.

Throwing more light on the matter, a community leader, Chief Oliver Agbo, said events leading up to the killings were triggered when “certain elements on the other side began to clear the vast land in dispute, using caterpillars and bulldozers”.

“They claimed that they wanted to build an exclusive estate and may even have collected money from people as we learnt.

“We reported the development to our son and Mayor of Enugu South Local Government Area, Hon. Victor Agbo, whom we gathered promptly briefed the police authorities, upon which a stay-clear order was issued to all parties,” he added.

He further explained that on the day the men were shot and killed, the deceased were part of a larger team mandated by the Umunwakum and Umunogo families to visit the site to ascertain the level of compliance with the police directive.

“Three healthy young men were killed instantly as gunshots rang out from all directions; so many more escaped with varying degrees of bullet wounds, while others were butchered with machetes and axes”, Agbo recounted.

He, however, urged the police to identify and arrest those who engaged in the killings, which he described as genocide.

“It is insensitive, the height of recklessness and impunity for people to pick up arms against unarmed opponents in a civil contest.

“We do not want to take the laws into our own hands and then begin to decimate ourselves further; let the police help us by identifying and arresting specific culprits involved and then hold them to account,” he added.

Don’t single out my administration for probe – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday advised the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, not to restrict any probe he would want to carry out to his administration alone.

He said Buhari must extend his probe beyond his regime or else the probe will be seen as witch-hunting.

Jonathan made his position known at the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council which he presided over at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also said those calling for his administration’s probe should also add that the probe should be extended to the way oil wells and fields were allocated in the past.

The President also made it clear that he has not dissolved his cabinet as all ministers are expected to attend inauguration dinner on Thursday in their official capacity.

Buhari’ll fight corruption like I did —Guinea President

Buhari’ll fight corruption like I did —Guinea President

President Alpha Conde of Guinea

President Alpha Conde of Guinea has expressed confidence in the ability of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to fight corruption, adding that Buhari will fight corruption like he has done in his country.

The Guinean President said this while speaking with journalists after a meeting with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the Lagos State Governor-elect, Akinwunmi Ambode, in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said, “I came to Lagos to meet my brother, Tinubu before I meet with President Buhari. With the election of Buhari, who is a straight forward person that will fight corruption like me, I believe his emergence as President will culminate in a stronger relationship between Guinea and Nigeria.

“Before the last general elections in Nigeria, there were anxiety, fear and uncertainty over the land. It was the belief that the country would disintegrate. This is also drawn from the fact that Nigeria fought the Biafra war. The war against Boko Haram was also there which Africa has to jointly fight.”

Conde also described the outcome of the March 28 presidential election and acceptance of defeat by President Goodluck Jonathan as victory for Africa and Nigeria.

He said, “The election in Nigeria is a victory for Africa and Nigeria, being the biggest black African country. We also congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting defeat just like President Abdou Diouf of Senegal when he lost the presidential election.”

Tinubu said Africa must have its home-grown strategy to build its economy.

He said there was a need for Africa to address trade issues and conflicts being perpetuated by fundamentalists.

He said, “We must form that synergy amongst African countries to develop the continent. We must address open trade issues and conflict of fundamentalist. We must resolve our problems in order for our today to be better for a great continent of Africa.

“Now we have that leader; we have those leaders and they are working together to share ideas and share vision. We will rescue Africa from destitution, poverty and ignorance and that is all that we are working hard for.”

Ambode, in his remarks, assured Conde and the people of Guinea that the next four years would witness greater trade and commerce between Lagos and Guinea.

Rivers killings: Amaechi, Wike in war of words

Rivers killings: Amaechi, Wike in war of words

Wike and Amaechi

THE feud between the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and the Governor-elect, Chief Nyesom Wike, reached a boiling point on Tuesday when the former accused the latter of being responsible for the deaths recorded in the state during the 2015 general elections.

Amaechi had declared during a public lecture in Port Harcourt to mark his50th birthday that God would not allow a killer to be the governor of Rivers State.

But Wike, who had attended another public lecture in the state capital, said he had no record of killing anybody and expressed displeasure that a public officer like Amaechi could speak in manner that was not expected of him.

Wike expressed optimism that he would be sworn in as the governor of the state on May 29, despite moves by Amaechi to scuttle his inauguration.

Speaking further, Amaechi stated that the governor-elect should realise that he (Wike) was his chief of staff, adding that Wike’s record was with him.

Explaining that he will never kill anybody because of personal ambition, the governor dismissed Wike’s description of him (Amaechi) as a corrupt person, adding that the governor-elect was accusing him of corruption because he (Wike) was looking for a way to negotiate with him (Amaechi) and his supporters.

Amaechi said, “In a bid for Wike to be governor, he hired …. an ex-militant. They killed a young man in Okrika and cut off his private parts. They slashed a young man’s throat and decided to hang his head on a tree.

“When I wanted to become governor, God took me aside and allowed Rivers people to vote for Celestine Omehia and He brought me back. So, nobody died. In 2011, the opposition joined us to vote for us; nobody died.

“But because of one man’s ambition, we were losing human beings everyday. Walking like a thug, killing people like a thug. The God I worship will answer our prayers. God will not allow those who kill people to be governor of Rivers State. God will allow only those who worship Him. I am not perfect.

“Even some of you pray more than me. My priest told me God said we would defeat Nyesom Wike. God said so. The same way God told me in 2007 that I would be governor. God will not allow us to make a killer, somebody who has killed human beings, to become the governor of Rivers State.

“I have been listening to Mr. Nyesom Wike and I have been trying not to reply him. He has been accusing me of corruption and I have been trying to keep quiet over the issue of corruption. A thief cannot call me corrupt. The first lesson he needs to learn is that he was Chief of Staff to my government. If I have no records, I have records on him.

“Why Nyesom Wike is talking the way he is talking is that they are looking for us to come and negotiate with them, so that they can illegally stay in office. They cannot stay like that. We are already in court (tribunal),” Amaechi said.

Recalling how he decided not to probe his predecessor, Dr. Peter Odili, the governor pointed out that the people would at the end ask him about his achievements and not the number of people his administration probed.

However, Wike, who spoke through his Media aide, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, added that Amaechi’s comment against him was an indication that the governor was not worthy of holding public office.

He said, “Only a man who is irresponsible would make such a comment. It shows that he is not worthy of the public office he occupies. He (Amaechi) is making comments that are completely out of place for people who should be in leadership position.

“To begin with and contrary to what Governor Amaechi said, the governor-elect is a God-fearing person, who believes in the rule of law. He is not involved in any killing and he will never be involved. He has never done anything that is outside of the law.

“Such unguarded comments should be disregarded by members of the public and well-meaning persons just like Channels Television did and apologised seriously to Nigerians. Amaechi promoted insecurity everywhere.

“God has already made it possible for Barrister Nyesom Wike to be governor. The people have already endorsed it as they voted for him massively. Amaechi is too small to stop the will of the people. On May 29, 2015, that will would be consummated during the swearing-in of Barrister Nyesom Wike.”

Court bars NDLEA, others from arresting Kashamu

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday restrained security agencies in Nigeria from arresting and transporting the Senator-elect for Ogun East Senatorial District, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, to the United States to stand trial on drug-trafficking offences.

Justice Okon Abang, in a judgement on Wednesday, declared as illegal, the arrest and extradition of Kashamu in relation to drug-trafficking allegations from which he had been exonerated by two British courts.

Abang granted Kashamu’s prayer that having earlier obtained a judgment in Nigeria in January 2014 barring his arrest and extradition and the judgment having not been set aside, he could not be arrested and extradited.

The judge awarded a cost in the sum of N20,000 against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Attorney General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser to the President, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
