Boko Haram kills 16 in fresh attacks on Maiduguri

Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade

Sixteen persons were killed during an attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to invade Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Friday night.

Seventeen persons were injured in the attack that left many houses destroyed. The attack occurred a few hours after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Friday.

An online source also reported that a bomb exploded Saturday afternoon near Maiduguri’s main market, after the city was attacked before dawn by the insurgents using rocket-propelled grenades that killed at least 13 people. The explosion, it was gathered, occurred by the mosque near a market in the town.

One of our correspondents learnt that one of the insurgents joined the worshippers pretending to be one of them. The insurgent later detonated the bomb which killed some of the worshippers and injured many others.

In a swift reaction, Buhari, on Saturday condemned the latest attacks on the town.

In a statement issued by the head of his media team, Garba Shehu, the President warned that his administration would not tolerate wanton and willful destruction of lives by criminal elements bent on anarchy.

He stated that his administration meant business in its determination to tackle terrorism with all the resources available to his government.

Describing terrorists as cowardly murderers that target innocent people, Buhari declared that as the Commander-in-Chief, he had sworn to protect the security of Nigerians everywhere.

The President while calling for increased vigilance by local communities, assured that his administration would give security close attention, pledging that his government was committed to boosting the morale of the armed forces by effectively funding them and attending to their welfare.

He condoled with the families of the victims of the latest terrorist attacks on the town and assured them that the worst days of the criminal elements would soon be over.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the residents of the town were woken from their sleep as sounds of heavy gunshots and explosions rocked the town.

A member of the youth vigilance group, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to our correspondent on the phone, said that the insurgents tried to invade the town at about 12:50am on Saturday from Ajilari Cross and Bintu Sugar axis of the town.

He said the military were able to discover them on time and repelled them before they could further approach the town.

According to him, the engagement lasted for about two hours between 12:50am and 2:50am.

He added, “The insurgents were successfully repelled after heavy gunshots and explosions. They fled back into the dark towards the direction they came.”

He, however, said he could not ascertain the number of the casualties.

A resident of Gomari in the town which is in the same neighbourhood with Bintu Sugar, Abdul Idi, said five residents of the area were killed in the attack.

Idi said a stray bullet killed a man who slept outside in the open to get fresh air.

He also stated that four people were killed in a house affected by the explosion in the area.

According to Idi, eight other people died of stray bullets and explosives in some areas in the town.

Meanwhile, a security source who spoke with one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity on Saturday, said the insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades and detonated bombs in the town.

The source said that the fighter pilots of the Nigerian Air Force were deployed to bomb the insurgents and were able to dismantle them for ground troops to take over the area.

It was further gathered that several of the residents of the Airport Road axis of Maiduguri fled their communities in fear for safer places in the metropolis.

The source stated further that the troops were in control of the area and were intensifying a cordon and search operation designed to fish out and arrest the fleeing insurgents.

The source said, ‘‘Fighter jets were deployed to scatter them for ground troops to move in to take control of the area. As for casualty, I cannot give you any figure because the insurgents fired at buildings and killed some people; the military also got some of them.”

All efforts to get across to the Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, to comment on the development were futile as calls to his mobile phone did not connect.

Also, Olukolade had not responded to a text message sent to his phone as of the time of filing this report.

Boko Haram:Another bomb blast rocks Maiduguri market

Barely 24 hours after a suicide bomber killed 26 people in a mosque near Maiduguri’s main market, a bomb has exploded in another market within the city, witnesses and a security source said.

The sources said four persons were injured from Sunday’s explosion

Sunday’s blast occurred at Gamboru market near Nigeria Customs Service House in Maiduguri.

Witnesses said the bomb that exploded was buried in a heap of sacks at a spot where charcoal merchants have their stalls.

“The explosion did not kill any one but injured four persons among whom one has his arm completely ripped off by the blast”, said Jafar Aminu, a trader.

An official of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in Maiduguri, Abbas Gava, also confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES as he said “the explosive that went off may have been concealed in some of the piled up sacks of charcoal. But thank God the damage did not claim any life except four persons that got injured with one losing the whole of his hand”.Barely 24 hours after a suicide bomber killed 26 people in a mosque near Maiduguri’s main market, a bomb has exploded in another market within the city, witnesses and a security source said.

Kwankwaso acted right leaving Kano in N300 billion debt – Governor Ganduje

Abdullahi Ganduje

The new Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Sunday said it was normal for his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to leave the state in debt of over 300 billion naira.

Mr. Ganduje, who spoke to the journalists, said Mr. Kwankwaso should be praised rather than criticised as he transformed the state.

The governor said his predecessor committed no crime and went ahead to rationalise the huge debt as arising from the sudden drop in in oil revenue.

“I don’t think Kwankwaso has committed any crime for living behind these huge liabilities because whatever happened was planned, coordinated and executed with me.

I knew everything, the anticipations were high and we thought that things, according to oil money, will continue to be smooth. Suddenly, there was that disgracing drop,” Mr. Ganduje, who was deputy to Mr. Kwankwaso, said.

“In any case, living behind liabilities from one government to another is a normal thing. Those who are today shouting will do the same or even worst by the time they assumed office. My Governor Kwankwaso deserved to be highly praised for embarking upon the genuine transformational job in Kano state”.

Mr. Ganduje said to achieve his campaign promises, he will trim the number of ministries in Kano and establish due process and anti-corruption offices.

He said he will appoint a committee to look into how to increase the state’s internally generated revenue and assured that no one will be spared in the fight against corruption.

Buhari warns airport officials, others, against stopping ex-Ministers from travelling

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says officials of past administrations including ministers are entitled to their full rights and privileges under the constitution, and must not be subjected to any undue harassment and intimidation at the airports or at other points of entry and exit.

“We have not banned anyone from travelling,” Mr. Buhari said in a statement Saturday.

Responding to some cases of “V.I.P stoppages” at the airports as reported to him on Saturday, President Buhari directed all agencies under the governmentto run their affairs in full compliance with extant rules, regulations and the constitution of the country.

“Unless otherwise directed by the courts, no law-abiding citizens should be barred from travelling abroad,” he said.

“We must treat fellow citizens with courtesy and respect. Officials at the borders and other points of entry and exit should conduct their affairs in strict compliance with due process. No one has my permission to bar anyone from travelling abroad,” the president said.

Wash the dishes, bit of dusting, be naked: Pensioner places job advert to hire £20-an-hour nude cleaner... and gets 11 replies in a week

69-year-old divorcee from Bristol has had three previous naked cleaners

Claims the women, who must clean in the nude, always enjoy the work

He said: 'It's not illegal. I'm not harming anyone. I'm just a voyeur'

A self-confessed 'voyeur' pensioner is advertising in his local newsagents for a £20-an-hour nude cleaner and has received around 11 applications a week.

The 69-year-old divorcee from Bristol, who only wants to be known as John, has placed an advert in a newsagents as he seeks his fourth employee in as many years.

His demands are simple: wash the dishes, a bit of dusting and general tidying - all naked and in return they get paid above the market rate.

The former land surveyor, whose closest friends are unaware of his adventurous housekeeping, said there was 'nothing sexual' about the scenario

Job advert: A pensioner from Bristol is interviewing for his fourth naked cleaner in as many years and is getting 11 replies per week

John, who divorced his wife 24 years ago, said he enjoyed getting to know the women and slammed 'left-wing feminists with nothing else to say' who have criticised his adverts.

He said: 'I'm not doing anything illegal. I'm not harming anyone. I'm a voyeur, in the truest sense of the word.

'If I was a pervert, I would use an escort agency. If I wanted sex, I would go to a red light district.

'Demeaning to women? I don't think it is. I think that is pathetic actually.

'Often they say to me after their first shift: "That was not as bad as I thought it would be". I get to know them and become friends.'

John, who lives in Bristol with his rescue cat, Noodles, said he was first inspired to look into hiring a naked cleaner after a conversation with an old friend in London.

He said: 'We are very open-minded about life. As I drove home, I had a think about it and the idea grew on me.

'By the time I got back, I had thought about placing my advert at the local newsagent but I wondered if they would accept it.

'They said it was fine because it wasn't rude. I had 11 replies within a week. I spoke to them on the phone and whittled it down to about four who I then met over a coffee.

'One was a bit too much of a Page 3 girl for me. They had to be over-30, up to the age of 55. The lady I picked was 35 and she was with me for 18 months.'

John's first cleaner left when her husband got a promotion and the couple moved to Gloucester.

Undeterred, he moved quickly to find a replacement, and recruited another woman - a teacher.

Agreement: 69-year-old John's local shop agree his advert is not offensive and the pensioners believes nobody should be offended

John said: 'I got fewer replies the second time. Then the teacher quit because she had read about other teachers who were sacked for working in the sex industry.

'It's not so much about the money for the ladies. It's the sense of adventure, for both parties. I don't want them to do it because they need the money.

'After that, I decided to give up, but that didn't last long. I had a very nice third woman but she's gone off to Portsmouth now and that's why I've stuck a new advert up.'

John described his everyday life as 'ordinary' - he likes a drink in the pub, he is part of a quiz team, and he volunteers at a charity twice a week.

And after his cleaner had finished work, he likes to sit down and share a glass of wine with them - but nothing more.

He said: 'There are dozens of ways I could pay for woman. It is not a sexual kind of thing. I'm a voyeur, I accept that. No-one knows about it. It is a personal thing.

'I'm not embarrassed. If someone asked me: 'Are you that person?' I would answer honestly'.

Bountiful: John has already found three previous naked cleaners in the Kingswood area of Bristol, pictured, and says: ''Often they say to me after their first shift: "That was not as bad as I thought"

John's friend in London is still the only person who knows about what goes on behind closed doors at his house.

He said: 'I look for somebody who is interesting physically and somebody who has a life. Someone who feels happy within themselves.

'I think humans are interesting in all shapes and sizes. but a person's personality shines through when they are in the nude.

'We all have things we would like to improve. I disagree with cosmetic surgery.'

John has no plans to curtail his hobby any time soon, and has already had two responses to his most recent advert - along with multiple pranksters.

John said: 'I am going to keep having an adventure. Some people may think what I'm doing is wrong, and they are entitled to their opinion.

'But if I was some sort of dirty old pervert, why would I not do something more sexual?

'Yes I am a voyeur, yes I like to look at women, but I am not doing anything illegal. I am certainly not forcing the women to do anything.

'Two of the old cleaners still text me to this day to check up on me. I would recommend it to everyone.'

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday warned political forces or anyone who thought he would be answerable to him in the next four years, saying he belonged to nobody.

He spoke soon after he was formally inaugurated as the successor to Dr.Goodluck Jonathan at the Eagle Square, Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Amid intermittent applause and shouts of “Sai Baba” and “Sai Buhari” from the audience, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Muhammed, administered the oaths on Buhari at exactly 10.47am

In his inaugural speech, Buhari dressed in a cream-coloured kaftan with a brown cap to match stated that while he was prepared to serve Nigerians, who voted him into power on March 28, he would not be under the control of anybody.

“Having just a few minutes ago sworn on the Holy Book, I intend to keep my oath and serve as President to all Nigerians. I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody,” Buhari said.

He allayed the fears by some suspected past corrupt leaders who might view Buhari’s presidency as coming to victimise them.

He reassured such persons that their fears were unfounded, adding that he had opted to put the past behind him.

I belong to nobody –President Buhari
Rather than going after such persons, the President said the immediate task before him was to address the major concerns of Nigerians, mainly insecurity, “intolerable corruption” and epileptic power supply.

Although his speech did not clearly indicate the drastic steps he would take to solve the problem of the power sector, he recalled that the $20bn spent on the sector since 1999 had only left Nigeria in “darkness and misery” which must be “addressed.”

The President said, “No single cause can be identified to explain Nigeria’s poor economic performance over the years than the power situation. It is a national shame that an economy of 180 million generates only 4,000MW and distributes even less.

“Continuous tinkering with the structures of power supply and distribution and close on $20bn expended since 1999 have only brought darkness, frustration, misery and resignation among Nigerians. We will not allow this to go on. Careful studies are under way during this transition to identify the quickest, safest and most cost-effective way to bring light and relief to Nigerians.”

On insecurity, he admitted that the Boko Haram sect remained the major threat to Nigeria, saying that the Federal Government under him “must” do everything within its powers to bring insurgency to an end.

He arrived at the Eagle Square, Abuja, view of the inauguration at exactly 9.40 am, the time slated for him to arrive the venue in the programme of events.

Buhari promised to relocate the command headquarters of the fighting forces of the military to Maiduguri, Borno State, until Boko Haram was defeated.

The President added that his government would work tirelessly to ensure that the Chibok schoolgirls and other captives held by the terrorist group were released alive.

He said, “Progress has been made in recent weeks by our security forces but victory cannot be achieved by basing the command and control centre in Abuja.

“The command centre will be relocated to Maiduguri and remain until Boko Haram is completely subdued. But we cannot claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents. This government will do all it can to rescue them alive.”

On corruption, the President asked other tiers of government to support him in the arduous task of cleaning the country of sleaze, particularly in the public service.

He said, “Elsewhere relations between Abuja and the states have to be clarified if we are to serve the country better. Constitutionally, there are limits to powers of each of the three tiers of government but that should not mean the Federal Government should fold its arms and close its eyes to what is going on in the states and local governments. Not least the operations of the Local Government Joint Account.

“While the Federal Government cannot interfere in the details of its operations, it will ensure that the gross corruption at the local level is checked.

“As far as the constitution allows me I will try to ensure that there is responsible and accountable governance at all levels of government in the country. For I will not have kept my own trust with the Nigerian people if I allow others abuse theirs under my watch.”

The President also gave an insight into how he would relate with the National Assembly and the Judiciary.

He noted that while he would not interfere in the activities of the legislature, Buhari advised the National Assembly to stick to its “brief of making laws.”

Buhari called on the judiciary to free itself from the mistakes of the past where some judicial officers were perceived to be corrupt. He also sought the cooperation of labour unions, organised private sector, the press and civil society organisations.

According to him, employers and workers must unite in raising productivity so that everybody will have the opportunity to share in increased prosperity.

“The Nigerian press is the most vibrant in Africa. My appeal to the media today – and this includes the social media – is to exercise its considerable powers with responsibility and patriotism,” he said.

Acknowledging the task before him, Buhari said, “With depleted foreign reserves, falling oil prices, leakages and debts the Nigerian economy is in deep trouble and will require careful management to bring it round and to tackle the immediate challenges confronting us.”

The challenges, he said, included Boko Haram, the Niger Delta situation, the power shortages andunemployment, especially among youths.

Buhari said, “For the longer term, we have to improve the standards of our education. We have to look at the whole field of medicare. We have to upgrade our dilapidated physical infrastructure.”

Before the inauguration, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, former Vice-President, Namadi Sambo and other top officials of government had arrived the Eagle Square amid cheers.

Buhari and Jonathan too had arrived in succession, acknowledging cheers from the surging crowds.

It was Osinbajo, in company with his wife, Dolapo, who first took the oath of office and oath of allegiance at 10:30 am as dignitaries and supporters of the All Progressives Congress cheered.

When Buhari took his turn, the surging crowd nearly enveloped the podium, giving security operatives very tough time to control.

A 21-gun salute soon followed amid a colourful parade by a combined party of the military and the Nigeria Police Force.

Jonathan, who did not come with his wife, Patience, soon took his leave after handing over the symbol of authority to Buhari.

The former President waved his final goodbye, but without uttering a word as the brief ceremony lasted.

Wanted Nyako returns home today

Former Adamawa State Governor, Admiral Murtala Nyako (retd.)

Former Governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtal Nyako(retd.), is returning to Nigeria today, Saturday.

Nyako, who is coming from London via Lufthansa Airline flight, is expected to land in Abuja this evening.

One of his political aides, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said Nyako decided to return to Nigeria following the inauguration of Muhammadu Buhari as the President.

Nyako fled the country following his controversial impeachment by the Adamawa State House of Assembly.

His impeachment, which he is still contesting in court, was said to have been as a result of his disagreement with former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The former naval chief had accused the then President of having hands in the Boko Haram menace ravaging the North-East.

He also wrote a lengthy letter to the former President, accusing him of being anti-people.

Nyako was one of the five governors that defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress at the height of the PDP crisis.

The former governor was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission over allegation of financial crimes.

Kano pensioners drag Kwankwaso to EFCC

Barely 24 hours after the handing over of the mantle of leadership by the former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso to his Deputy, Abdullahi Ganduje, the pensioners in the state civil service have dragged Mr. Kwankwaso to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, demanding the repatriation of N2 billion pension money allegedly deposited by the former governor in a failed bank.

The pensioners, in a petition dated May 20, 2015 and signed by one Barrister A.B Bulama Esq, said the pensioners’ trustees had deposited N2billion in Euro Bank Plc, Kano branch, at the urgings of Mr. Kwankwaso.

They said soon after the deposit was made the bank went into liquidation and the former governor refused to follow up for claims.

They asked the EFCC to invite Mr. Kwankwaso to explain why he refused to follow up the case of the N2billion pension fund at the NDIC.

The petitioners noted that Mr. Kwankwaso was not a trustee of their funds and thus lacked the authority to deal with the funds as he liked.

They also queried the continued withholding of their money, about N10billion, by the commissioner of finance and the accountant general.

They said when they began to ask questions, the former governor told them he had purchased three warehouses for them at the Free Trade Zone in Kano.

He also said his housing projects, Amana City, had been transferred to the pension trust fund in lieu of the retained N10 billion.

The petitioners, however, noted that the Mr. Kwankwaso’s actions were illegal and bordered on fraud.

“For this and many more we ask the EFCC to do a thorough job to unravel the fraud done in all issues relating to us,” the pensioners said.

Mr. Kwankwaso could not be reached immediately for this story.

Casillas holding out for £10m pay-off as De Gea waits in the wings

30 May 2015 14:10:00

The club captain won't ask to leave the club in a bid to ensure he receives a sizeable loyalty bonus should the club choose to sell him SPECIAL REPORT

By Alberto Piñero in Madrid

Iker Casillas and Real Madrid look set for a summer stand-off as he refuses to request a move in a bid to ensure he receives a £10 million (€14m) pay-off.

The club captain claims he would like to stay at the club where he has spent his entire career, despite receiving boos and jeers from the Madrid fans on a number of occasions this season.

However, if he does leave the Santiago Bernabeu of his own accord, he would miss out on a £10m loyalty bonus.

As a result it is thought he may be playing a game of cat and mouse with Madrid to ensure he is handed that sum as a reward for spending 17 years at the club.

Likewise, if the club confirm he is for sale, they will have to pay Casillas the settlement, so it appears neither side are prepared to move first in what looks like a complicated series of negotiations.

However, Madrid want to sign Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, while current second-choice Keylor Navas has claimed he will "fight to the death" for his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Casillas has even admitted he hopes Madrid sign De Gea this summer, welcoming the competition from his younger Spain team-mate, despite the fact the 24-year-old would likely replace him as first choice keeper.

For his part, De Gea has remained silent amid talk of a summer switch from Old Trafford, but the former Atletico Madrid man wants a move to the Bernabeu and is waiting for the two clubs to begin negotiations over a possible transfer.

And like last summer, when Diego Lopez claimed he would stay and fight for his place at the club, current second-choice shot-stopper Keylor Navas is not giving up on his Madrid future either.

The Costa Rican goalkeeper said earlier this week that he would "fight to the death" for his Madrid future, but is almost certain to make way if De Gea arrives and Casillas decides to stay for another season.

Sports: Wenger: Premier League is the best because it has the best players

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that the Premier League's players, stadiums, support and history makes it the best league in the world.

Just five of Fifa's 23-man shortlist for the 2015 Ballon d'Or award - won by Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in January - currently ply their trade in England, while Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Manuel Pellegrini were the only Premier League names on the 10-man Coach of the Year shortlist, ultimately claimed by Carlo Ancelotti.

But Wenger, who has managed Arsenal for 19 years having previously coached Nancy-Lorraine, Monaco and Japanese outfit Nagoya Grampus Eight, believes no other division compares to the English top flight.

"I would agree with that," Wenger told BBC Radio 4's 'World at One' programme when asked about the Premier League potentially being the world's best.

"It's the quality of the stadiums, the quality of the support, the passion that is behind every single club and the fact that the best players in the world are concentrated in the Premier League.

"All that together makes it special, and on top of that you are in the country where football has been created and somewhere when you come from abroad you feel that here it has been done and you want to be part of it."

Sport: Rio Ferdinand retires from football

The 36-year-old has called time on his 19-year career, having won six Premier League titles and the Champions League with Manchester UnitedRio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old has called time on his 19-year career after being released by QPR earlier this week.

Ferdinand won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and three League Cup trophies in 12 seasons with Manchester United. He was also capped 81 times by England.

Ferdinand missed the latter stage of QPR's campaign in order to be with his wife, Rebecca Ellison, who died after a battle with cancer on May 1.

“After 18 years as a professional footballer, I now feel it's the right time for me to retire from the game that I love," Ferdinand said in a statement to BT Sport.

“As a 12-year-old boy, kicking around a football on the Friary Estate in Peckham, I never dreamt that I would play for my boyhood club West Ham, captain Leeds United, win the Champions League with Manchester United, or re-join my first manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers.

“I will always regard the 81 times that I played for England, with immense pride. These are all treasured memories that will last a lifetime.

“Starting a career, every young man needs mentors. I found mine in Dave Goodwin, the district manager at Blackheath, and Tony Carr, the youth team manager at West Ham. They installed in me personality traits that lasted throughout my career. I will always be grateful to them.

“I'd like to thank Chris Ramsey, Harry Redknapp, David O'Leary and David Moyes who managed me at various times in my career, all the backroom staff who looked after me over the years, and the players that I played with. I would also like to thank the team who managed me off the pitch, Jamie Moralee and everybody at New Era.

“Winning trophies over my 13 years at Manchester United allowed me to achieve everything that I desired in football. From a young child to today, that was all I cared about.

“None of that would have been possible, without the genius of one man, Sir Alex Ferguson. His greatest accomplishment in my eyes will always be how he developed us as men, not just as footballers. He will in my opinion, always be the greatest manager in British football history.

“I'd also like to thank and pay tribute to my wife Rebecca and my family, including my mother and father, for their sacrifices, their encouragement and their advice throughout my career.

“And finally, I'd like to thank all the fans from all the clubs - for without them professional football would not exist. I will miss each and every one of you on my Saturday afternoons.”

Neymar is a born leader – Former coach

Neymar

Brazil captain Neymar is a born leader, according to the Barcelona star’s former coach.

According to Goal, the 23-year-old was handed his country’s captaincy by coach Dunga following last year’s World Cup and has since led the Selecao to eight consecutive victories, scoring eight goals in the process.

The decision to pass him the armband previously held by Thiago Silva raised some eyebrows due to the forward’s lack of experience, but his former youth team coach, Darlan Santana da Silva, says Neymar showed leadership qualities from a very young age.

“Since he was a kid, Neymar was a leader,” Da Silva told Goal.

“He is respected by his friends and has a great sense of humour. I’ve never seen him be questioned for trying to do something different and it was very rare that it didn’t come off. And on the few occasions it happened, he simply apologised.”

Set to lead his country into next month’s Copa America, Neymar has been playing top level football without a break for a number of years now, having participated in Copa America 2011, the London Olympics in 2012, Confederations Cup 2013 and World Cup 2014.

Boko Haram attacks Maiduguri, explosions kill residents

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, came under the attack of Boko Haram militants on Saturday morning as the terrorists stormed the town with bombs and heavy shootings.

Five residents reportedly died during the attack while the casualties among the militants has yet to be ascertained.

Unconfirmed reports also claimed that 10 persons were killed in the areas that were attacked.

A member of the youth vigilance group, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, said some insurgents attempted to invade the troubled town at about 12.50am on Saturday from the Ajilari Cross and Bintu Sugar areas of the town.

He said the soldiers quickly responded and engaged them before they could advance and overrun the town.

The source added that the fight lasted for about two hours, subsiding at about 2.50am.

“The insurgents were successfully repelled after the heavy shelling, gunshots and explosions. They fled into the dark towards the direction they came from,” he said.

He could not however ascertain the number of casualties.

A resident of Gomari, part of Maiduguri, which is in the same neighborhood with Bintu Sugar, Ibrahim Iliya, who spoke to our correspondents on the telephone, said five residents of the area were killed in the attempted invasion.

Iliya said a stray bullet killed a man who was sleeping in the open as a result of the harsh weather.

He revealed that four people were killed in a house which was affected by the explosion in the area.

Zimbabwe bans arrest of sex workers

Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court has outlawed the arrest of women on charges of soliciting for sex in the absence of confirmation from men that they were offered the services for a fee, local media reported Saturday.

The court made the ruling Wednesday in an application by nine women who were contesting their arrest.

The women were arrested in Harare in March 2014 during an operation by police code-named “No to Robberies and Prostitution.”

The court declared the arrest and prosecution unconstitutional.

The court’s consent order read in part: “By consent, it is ordered as follows, that the prosecution and remand of the accused persons on allegations of contravening Section 81 (2) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act (Chapter 9:23) on March 17 2014 amount to a deprivation of their personal liberty in contravention of Section 49 (1) (b) of the Constitution and are a denial of the fundamental right of the applicants to the protection of the law guaranteed under Section 56(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.”

Women rights activists had for long complained about the gender discrimination associated with the police’s operations that had become a common feature in the capital, Harare.

Most times, women were arrested and charged with loitering for the purposes of prostitution simply on suspicion arising from wearing miniskirts.

Though, only soaring in popularity in recent months especially in the build up to the March 28 presidential election, where her husband, Muhammadu, a retired general and former Head of State, coasted to an overwhelming victory, Aisha has always been a known face especially among people who seek to pamper their bodies. The First Lady, until recently, owned one of the biggest spas and beauty institutes in the country.

Situated along Camp Road, a high brow area of Ungwan-Rimi Government Residential Area in Kaduna, Hanzy Spa and Hanzy Beauty Institute was always a beehive of activities all week long. It is the first beauty institute in northern Nigeria, a National Board of Technical Education accredited vocational training centre and registered by the Ministry of Education with the aim of exploring the untapped wealth in the emerging beauty industry.

However, since the victory of her husband in March and his eventually swearing-in in Abuja, Aisha has since closed down the beauty parlour to take up the new role of Nigeria’s First Lady. The spa and beauty institute patronised by individuals across class, was sighted close to the private residence of the immediate past Vice President, Namadi Sambo. The institute was consulted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation/Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company to help train individuals under its Youth Empowerment and Skill Acquisition Programme.

But as popular and strategically-placed as the spa and beauty institute was, not many knew Aisha was the brains behind it. Like her more popular husband, who is famed for shying away from the limelight and prefers to stay in the background most of the time, she operated the business only as a professional and not as wife of a former Head of State. Many clients, who visited the place and also came across her, attested to how simple and impressive at customers’ relations she was.

But Aisha didn’t just venture into the business of pampering people’s skin and bodies; she worked very hard to learn the tricks of the business and how to succeed in it. A trained esthetician, who obtained a diploma inBeauty Therapy from the Carlton Institute of Beauty Therapy, Windsor, United Kingdom and a certificate course from the French Beauty School, Esthetique Academie Dubai, she is a member of the United Kingdom’s Vocational Training and Charitable Trust and the International Health and Beauty Council.

In an interview she granted Thisday Style last year, the beautiful Adamawa State-born mother of five said, “I’m a very busy person who does her things quietly. I keep to my profession as an esthetician, managing my spa and beauty institute both in Kaduna and Abuja. I also personally perform some advanced facial treatments like mesotherapy, gold facial and application of TCA etc. I have a number of documentations on my experience in this area including writing a book, The Essentials of Beauty Therapy.

Though, now saddled with the bigger responsibility of giving her husband the needed moral and emotional support required to bring massive transformation to a country craving for change, Aisha’s training and experience as a beauty expert could come to bear in the colouration of things within her control in the coming weeks. For neighbours close to the First Lady’s now closed beauty institute, they would miss the atmosphere she brought to the area.

Buhari vows to enforce accountability in States, Local Govts.

Newly inaugurated Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday vowed to enforce responsible and accountable governance at all levels of government in the country.

In his first speech shortly after taking his oath of office, Mr. Buhari said with Nigeria’s new commitment to democracy and the determination by Nigerians to entrench its culture, there was need to clarify the relations between Abuja and the 36 states in the country’s best interest.

Although he acknowledged the limits to the powers of the three tiers of government as enshrined in the Constitution, the president said the Federal Government would not fold its arms and close its eyes to the goings-on in the states and local governments.

Making particular reference to the Local Government Joint Account, Mr. Buhari said although the Federal Government cannot interfere in the details of its operations, it would ensure that the gross corruption at the local level was checked.

“As far as the constitution allows me, I will try to ensure that there is responsible and accountable governance at all levels of government in the country,” the president said.
He said he would have failed to keep his trust with the people if allowed others abuse their power under his watch.

While Nigeria has three tiers of government, only the states and the federal have been relatively functional.

For years, Nigeria’s powerful governors have hijacked the operations of the lowest tier – the local government – by seizing funds meant for their development, through what they term, “joint accounts”.

Repeated attempts at amending the Constitution to grant full autonomy to the local government have been unsccuessful.

On his inauguration as the sixth democratically elected president of the Federal Republic, Mr. Buhari thanked God for preserving Nigerians to witness the occasion.

He said the day marked a triumph for Nigeria and an occasion to celebrate the country’s freedom and her democracy.

“Nigerians have shown their commitment to democracy and are determined to entrench its culture,” he said.

He eulogised his predecessor in office, former President Goodluck Jonathan, for his display of statesmanship.

He said his unprecedented decision to have conceded defeat during the elections had set the precedence for all Nigerians to be proud of.

“He (Jonathan) has made it possible for us to show the world that despite the perceived tension in the land, we can be a united people capable of doing what is right for our nation,” he said. “Together we co-operated to surprise the world that had come to expect only the worst from Nigeria. I hope this act of graciously accepting defeat by the outgoing President will become the standard of political conduct in the country.”

The new president used the occasion to reassure Nigeria’s neighbours in the sub-region and African regions of the country’s readiness under his administration to play the expected leadership role in Africa.

Thugs attack Daily Trust reporter at Gov. Al-Makura’s inauguration

The Nasarawa State correspondent of Daily Trust, Hir Joseph, was attacked by armed thugs in the presence of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, just as the governor was taking the oath of office in Lafia Friday.

Mr. Joseph has written stories critical of the governor in the past, a reason his colleagues say he was targeted by the youth.

Mr. Joseph reportedly said in a recent report that Mr. Almakura should not be sworn into office.

Some of the thugs wore white T-Shirts with the inscription: TA’AL, the short for Tanko Al-Makura, a popular campaign slogan of the governor.

Two thugs marched to the reporter while he was standing with his colleagues by the platform where the governor was taking the oath.

“They ordered me to follow them. I politely asked if there was any problem. There was no answer from any of them. Instead, they pounced on me, and lifted me on their shoulders and made to take me away,” the reporter said afterwards.

The thugs dragged him metres away before officers and men of the police, and Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), led by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Umaru Ismaila stormed in on them, and tried to force the reporter from their grip.

Reporters, who were present at Lafia Square, venue of the inauguration, said the thugs grew in number, as they dragged their colleague, beating him in the process.

Witnesses said journalists who tried to take photographs of the attack on their colleagues were accosted by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Yakubu Lamai, who also questioned some security operatives, who took photographs of the attack with their phones.

“Instead of trying to help the reporter, who was crying for help, the governor’s CPS was trying to block us from taking photo shots. He even attempted snapping our phones and cameras from our hands,” a colleague of Hir said.

Mr. Lamai denied the allegation. He told PREMIUM TIMES he was unaware of the attack.

Some reporters were ordered to leave the venue of the inauguration immediately.

Mr. Joseph was later taken to a nearby hospital by personnel of the Red Cross.

The incident happened at about 11:28a.m.

Buhari to earn N14 million as annual salary, allowances

...Osinbajo to earn N12 Million

Buhari and Osinbajo

Nigeria’s new president, Muhammadu Buhari, and his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, will earn annual basic salaries of N3, 514, 705 and N3, 031, 572.50 respectively, according to the information on the website of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

The RMAFC is statutorily empowered by Section 32 (d) of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the Constitution to determine the remuneration appropriate for political office holders.

Apart from the salaries, the president is entitled to various regular allowances like: Hardship, 50 per cent of the basic salary – N1, 757, 350.50; consistency – 250 per cent, N8, 786, 762.50.

Other regular allowances like motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance, special assistant, personal assistant, domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, security and Newspapers and periodicals are to be provided by the government – not paid for.

Allowances like accommodation, furniture, and duty tour allowance (per night), estacode (per night) and medical allowances are also to be provided as requested.

The allowances are paid periodically, some monthly, a few once in four years. Duty Tour Allowance and Estacode depend on travels.

For instance, furniture allowance to other cadre of officials, like ministers and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, is given once in four years. The President and Vice President are not paid furniture allowance as they are provided for.

When all allowances payable each month are added, President Buhari will take home N1, 171,568.33 each month, and N14, 058, 820.00 yearly.

Vice President Osinbajo will receive N1, 010, 524. 17 monthly, and N12, 126,290.00 per annum.

Details of Allowances

The president’s severance gratuity is N10, 544, 115, that is 300 per cent of basic; he is entitled to a leave allowance of N351, 470. 50, (10 per cent of basic salary) and an optional motor vehicle loan of N14, 058, 820, at 400 per cent to be repaid before the expiration of the president’s tenure.

Mr. Osinbajo will also get allowances such as motor vehicle, feeding and maintenance, special assistant, personal assistant, domestic staff, entertainment utility, security, newspaper and periodicals.

While the number two man’s hardship, consistency, severance gratuity and leave allowance are at N1, 515, 786.25; N7, 578, 931.25; N9, 094, 717.50 and N303, 157.25 respectively.

He will also receive a motor vehicle loan at 400 per cent of his basic salary which is N12, 126, 290; to be repaid at the expiration of his tenure.

The salaries and allowances are drawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

The current salary structure and allowances were fixed by the RMAFC in 2007.

Before the review, the basic annual salary of the then president, Olusegun Obasanjo, was N2,586,000 per annum, while that of his deputy, Atiku Abubakar was N1,938,000 the same as that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Senate President, both heads of the judiciary and the legislature.

This was as a result of the review of the salary structure and associated allowances for the top federal public office holders earlier carried out by the National Salaries and Wages Commission.

This followed the review of the salary structure and associated allowances for the top federal public office holders earlier carried out by the National Salaries and Wages Commission.

That review, which took effect on May 1, 2000, was contained in a memo SWC.04/S.1/Vol.1V/186 dated May 15, 2000 and signed by G.P.O. Chikelu, the then Chairman of the Commission.

Buhari’s Handlers and the Social Media Fraud at Twitter Nigeria

Barely 24 hours into the inauguration of Muhammadu Buhari as President of Nigeria on May 29, 2015, Twitter Nigeria officially verified the handle @NGRPresident as the official Twitter handle of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Similarly, Twitter also verified @FLON – First Lady of Nigeria. The @NGRPresident handle now belongs to President Muhammadu Buhari while the @FLON handle now belongs to Aisha Buhari as First Lady of Nigeria.

A careful interrogation of the accounts shows clearly that these accounts are not newly created accounts but already existing private accounts of Muhammadu Buhari and Aisha Buhari which have been active and in use for the Buhari Presidential campaign even before he won the presidential elections of March 28, 2015. They were simply updated and verified within 24 hours of Buhari’s inauguration.

The @NGRPresident was announced by @MBuhari as the official handle of the President on Friday May 29, 2015 shortly after Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration.

These two people only became president and first lady today. The @FLON handle has a tweet that was tweeted on April 17, 2015 that says “#CountDowntoChange” which suggests that Aisha Buhari and her handlers have been sitting on this handle. A similar trend is obvious with the @NGRPresident handle as shown in the screenshot above.

Something is definitely fishy here and betrays the distasteful partisanship of the staff and handlers at Twitter Nigeria. More repugnant is the fact that the official and verified handle of Twitter in Nigeria – @TwitterNigeria has been re-tweeting pro Buhari campaign tweets even before his victory at the March 28, 2015 polls was announced and subsequently, his official inauguration on May 29, 2015 as President. Pray, what is the business of the official and verified Twitter handle of Twitter Nigeria with partisan politics? Is this not a careless violation of the non-partisan ethics of Twitter as a global social media corporation?

From their tweeting history, the @NGRPresident and @FLON handles have been active and in existence even before Buhari’s victory and inauguration. So why were the handles not made available for the official use of the offices of President Goodluck Jonathan and Dame Patience Jonathan before today?

Apparently these two handles have been in the possession of Buhari’s handlers who clearly are working in partisan collusion with the staff at Twitter Nigeria. The Editorial Board of BREAKING TIMES observes that this is a breach of social media ethics and protocol on the part of Buhari’s team and on the part of Twitter Nigeria. The sheer moral repugnance of it is condemnable.

Worse still, that the official and verified handle of Twitter in Nigeria would retweet pro Buhari political tweets smacks nothing but a partisan mess that Twitter must correct and internally reprimand to preserve its corporate image and serve as a deterrent to erring staff who are dragging the name of the brand into partisan politics.

That Twitter Nigeria would verify the official handle of the highest office in the land and hold it back from the legitimate occupant of that office until a later date when a ‘preferred’ President assumes office is to say the least, reprehensible.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 Inaugural Speech

Inaugural speech by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari following his swearing-in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 29th May, 2015

I am immensely grateful to God Who Has preserved us to witness this day and this occasion. Today marks a triumph for Nigeria and an occasion to celebrate her freedom and cherish her democracy. Nigerians have shown their commitment to democracy and are determined to entrench its culture. Our journey has not been easy but thanks to the determination of our people and strong support from friends abroad we have today a truly democratically elected government in place.

I would like to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for his display of statesmanship in setting a precedent for us that has now made our people proud to be Nigerians wherever they are. With the support and cooperation he has given to the transition process, he has made it possible for us to show the world that despite the perceived tension in the land we can be a united people capable of doing what is right for our nation. Together we co-operated to surprise the world that had come to expect only the worst from Nigeria. I hope this act of graciously accepting defeat by the outgoing President will become the standard of political conduct in the country.

I would like to thank the millions of our supporters who believed in us even when the cause seemed hopeless. I salute their resolve in waiting long hours in rain and hot sunshine to registerand cast their votes and stay all night if necessary to protect and ensure their votes count and were counted. I thank those who tirelessly carried the campaign on the social media. At the same time, I thank our other countrymen and women who did not vote for us but contributed to make our democratic culture truly competitive, strong and definitive.

I thank all of you.

Having just a few minutes ago sworn on the Holy Book, I intend to keep my oath and serve as President to all Nigerians.

I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody.

A few people have privately voiced fears that on coming back to office I shall go after them. These fears are groundless. There will be no paying off old scores. The past is prologue.

Our neighbours in the Sub-region and our African brethenen should rest assured that Nigeria under our administration will be ready to play any leadership role that Africa expects of it. Here I would like to thank the governments and people of Cameroon, Chad and Niger for committing their armed forces to fight Boko Haram in Nigeria.

I also wish to assure the wider international community of our readiness to cooperate and help to combat threats of cross-border terrorism, sea piracy, refugees and boat people, financial crime, cyber crime, climate change, the spread of communicable diseases and other challenges of the 21st century.

At home we face enormous challenges. Insecurity, pervasive corruption, the hitherto unending and seemingly impossible fuel and power shortages are the immediate concerns. We are going to tackle them head on. Nigerians will not regret that they have entrusted national responsibility to us. We must not succumb to hopelessness and defeatism. We can fix our problems.

In recent times Nigerian leaders appear to have misread our mission. Our founding fathers, Mr Herbert Macauley, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Malam Aminu Kano, Chief J.S. Tarka, Mr Eyo Ita, Chief Denis Osadeby, Chief Ladoke Akintola and their colleagues worked to establish certain standards of governance. They might have differed in their methods or tactics or details, but they were united in establishing a viable and progressive country. Some of their successors behaved like spoilt children breaking everything and bringing disorder to the house.

Furthermore, we as Nigerians must remind ourselves that we are heirs to great civilizations: Shehu Othman Dan fodio’s caliphate, the Kanem Borno Empire, the Oyo Empire, the Benin Empire and King Jaja’s formidable domain. The blood of those great ancestors flow in our veins. What is now required is to build on these legacies, to modernize and uplift Nigeria.

Daunting as the task may be it is by no means insurmountable. There is now a national consensus that our chosen route to national development is democracy. To achieve our objectives we must consciously work the democratic system. The Federal Executive under my watch will not seek to encroach on the duties and functions of the Legislative and Judicial arms of government. The law enforcing authorities will be charged to operate within the Constitution. We shall rebuild and reform the public service to become more effective and more serviceable. We shall charge them to apply themselves with integrity to stabilize the system.

For their part the legislative arm must keep to their brief of making laws, carrying out over-sight functions and doing so expeditiously. The judicial system needs reform to cleanse itself from its immediate past. The country now expects the judiciary to act with dispatch on all cases especially on corruption, serious financial crimes or abuse of office. It is only when the three arms act constitutionally that government will be enabled to serve the country optimally and avoid the confusion all too often bedeviling governance today.

Elsewhere relations between Abuja and the States have to be clarified if we are to serve the country better. Constitutionally there are limits to powers of each of the three tiers of government but that should not mean the Federal Government should fold its arms and close its eyes to what is going on in the states and local governments. Not least the operations of the Local Government Joint Account. While the Federal Government can not interfere in the details of its operations it will ensure that the gross corruption at the local level is checked. As far as the constitution allows me I will try to ensure that there is responsible and accountable governance at all levels of government in the country. For I will not have kept my own trust with the Nigerian people if I allow others abuse theirs under my watch.

However, no matter how well organized the governments of the federation are they can not succeed without the support, understanding and cooperation of labour unions, organized private sector, the press and civil society organizations. I appeal to employers and workers alike to unite in raising productivity so that everybody will have the opportunity to share in increased prosperity. The Nigerian press is the most vibrant in Africa. My appeal to the media today – and this includes the social media – is to exercise its considerable powers with responsibility and patriotism.

My appeal for unity is predicated on the seriousness of the legacy we are getting into. With depleted foreign reserves, falling oil prices, leakages and debts the Nigerian economy is in deep trouble and will require careful management to bring it round and to tackle the immediate challenges confronting us, namely; Boko Haram, the Niger Delta situation, the power shortages and unemployment especially among young people. For the longer term we have to improve the standards of our education. We have to look at the whole field of medicare. We have to upgrade our dilapidated physical infrastructure.

The most immediate is Boko Haram’s insurgency. Progress has been made in recent weeks by our security forces but victory can not be achieved by basing the Command and Control Centre in Abuja. The command centre will be relocated to Maiduguri and remain until Boko Haram is completely subdued. But we can not claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents.

This government will do all it can to rescue them alive. Boko Haram is a typical example of small fires causing large fires. An eccentric and unorthodox preacher with a tiny following was given posthumous fame and following by his extra judicial murder at the hands of the police. Since then through official bungling, negligence, complacency or collusion Boko Haram became a terrifying force taking tens of thousands of lives and capturing several towns and villages covering swathes of Nigerian sovereign territory.

Boko Haram is a mindless, godless group who are as far away from Islam as one can think of. At the end of the hostilities when the group is subdued the Government intends to commission a sociological study to determine its origins, remote and immediate causes of the movement, its sponsors, the international connexions to ensure that measures are taken to prevent a reccurrence of this evil. For now the Armed Forces will be fully charged with prosecuting the fight against Boko haram. We shall overhaul the rules of engagement to avoid human rights violations in operations. We shall improve operational and legal mechanisms so that disciplinary steps are taken against proven human right violations by the Armed Forces.

Boko Haram is not only the security issue bedeviling our country. The spate of kidnappings, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers clashes, cattle rustlings all help to add to the general air of insecurity in our land. We are going to erect and maintain an efficient, disciplined people – friendly and well – compensated security forces within an over – all security architecture.

The amnesty programme in the Niger Delta is due to end in December, but the Government intends to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place. I call on the leadership and people in these areas to cooperate with the State and Federal Government in the rehabilitation programmes which will be streamlined and made more effective. As ever, I am ready to listen to grievances of my fellow Nigerians. I extend my hand of fellowship to them so that we can bring peace and build prosperity for our people.

No single cause can be identified to explain Nigerian’s poor economic performance over the years than the power situation. It is a national shame that an economy of 180 million generates only 4,000MW, and distributes even less. Continuous tinkering with the structures of power supply and distribution and close on $20b expanded since 1999 have only brought darkness, frustration, misery, and resignation among Nigerians. We will not allow this to go on. Careful studies are under way during this transition to identify the quickest, safest and most cost-effective way to bring light and relief to Nigerians.

Unemployment, notably youth un-employment features strongly in our Party’s Manifesto. We intend to attack the problem frontally through revival of agriculture, solid minerals mining as well as credits to small and medium size businesses to kick – start these enterprises. We shall quickly examine the best way to revive major industries and accelerate the revival and development of our railways, roads and general infrastructure.

Your Excellencies, My fellow Nigerians I can not recall when Nigeria enjoyed so much goodwill abroad as now. The messages I received from East and West, from powerful and small countries are indicative of international expectations on us. At home the newly elected government is basking in a reservoir of goodwill and high expectations. Nigeria therefore has a window of opportunity to fulfill our long – standing potential of pulling ourselves together and realizing our mission as a great nation.

Our situation somehow reminds one of a passage in Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar

There is a tide in the affairs of men which,

taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life,

Is bound in shallows and miseries.

We have an opportunity. Let us take it.

Thank you

Muhammadu Buhari

President Federal Republic of NIGERIA

and Commander in-chief-of the Armed forces

Muhammadu Buhari is sworn in as Nigeria president

President Buhari said Nigeria now had "a window of opportunity to fulfil her potential"

Nigeria decides

The winner of Nigeria's presidential election in March, Muhammadu Buhari, has been sworn in as leader of Africa's most populous country.

Mr Buhari is the first opposition figure to win a presidential election in Nigeria since independence in 1960.

"I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody", he told cheering crowds at the inauguration in the capital, Abuja.

He vowed to tackle "head on" the issues of corruption and the insurgency from militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

Mr Buhari, a former military ruler, has taken over from Goodluck Jonathan, who had been in office since 2010.

Will Ross, BBC News, Abuja:

As soon as Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in the invited guests in Eagle Square rose to their feet, danced and sang their new president's name. As he was then driven around in an open vehicle, people rushed forward to record the moment on their phones.

This was a time for celebration not just for supporters of the new leader but also for Nigerians who are proud that their country has witnessed this historic transition. By conceding Goodluck Jonathan steered the country away from violence. We will never know how close Nigeria was to the precipice.

Moments after Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in thousands of excited young men ran through the security barriers to Eagle Square and pressed up against the perimeter fence cheered their new leader. It was a stark reminder that so many in Nigeria are expecting change, including jobs, from President Buhari.

As Mr Jonathan is driven away I would not be surprised if he has a sense of relief and feels an almighty weight has just been lifted off his shoulders.

At the inauguration ceremony at Abuja's Eagle Square - Mr Jonathan handed over the constitution and national flags before Mr Buhari took his oath of office.

"I will discharge my duties to the best of my ability, faithfully and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the law," he said to cheering crowds.

The announcer declared to the audience afterwards: "Change has come to Nigeria."

Seen as incorruptible
Poor human rights record

Among the guests at the ceremony was US Secretary of State John Kerry and African leaders including Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe.

Mr Buhari comes into power as Nigeria faces significant economic as well as security challenges with an Islamist insurgency having devastated towns and villages in the north-east.

Besides tackling the Boko Haram militants, Mr Buhari has promised to stamp out corruption.
