Murder of 9-yr-old: Mother, son to die by hanging

Y esterday was judgement day for the mother and son who beheaded a nine-year-old boy, Kasarachi Oforji, in 2006 as an Owerri High Court ruled that they must die by hanging. Presiding over the murder case, Justice Ngozi Opara sentenced Mrs. Felicia Uzoma (50) and her 23-year-old son, Mr. Kelvin Uzoma of Umuozu Ngugo community in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, to death for the crime.

Delivering the judg-ment on the case with Suit No HM15C/2007, Justice Opara held that the two accused were found guilty of the crime for which they were charged and were sentenced accordingly in line with the laws of the land.

“In the face of all the evidence, I am of the view and firm belief and hold strongly that the two accused persons committed the offense and should be sentenced according to the provisions of the law. I hereby find them guilty as charged,” Justice Opara said. According to the ruling, Mrs. Uzoma should be hanged by the neck till she is dead while her son, Mr. Kelvin Uzoma, should also be hanged by the neck till he is dead.

The judge said that they should be remanded at the maximum security prison in Port Harcourt pending the day of their execution which will be determined by Rochas Okorocha, Imo State Governor. When the convicts were to be conveyed out of the court in a Black Maria, the octogenarian mother of the convicted woman flung herself at the Black Maria that was carrying away her daughter and grandchild but she was pinned down by security operatives who pleaded with her to leave.
