Igbo-speaking schools have opened in Ghana to foster the language, its culture and tradition.
Established and funded under the auspices of EZEIGBO Foundation, the school was launched in Accra at the weekend by the Ezeigbo Ghana, His Royal Highness, Eze (Dr) Chukwudi Jude Ihennetu, Eze Ohazurumee I.
Five centres have been opened in Accra while other regions were to get similar facilities soon, he said, adding that Igbo language and culture was at the verge of extinction, as the present generation is alienated from their roots.
Citing a recent report by the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, (UNESCO), which predicted that the Igbo language was at the risk of extinction in the next 50 years, the monarch described the introduction of free and basic Igbo language schools in Ghana as one of the measures undertaken to halt the trend.
The Nigerian High commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Jude Igbokwe, commended the Igbos for achieving that feat.
